LESSON 4 – “Man & Woman in Eden”

Passage: Genesis 2:4-17

Key Questions

  1. Is this a second creation account?  A totally different version?  Why or why not?
  2. What is the story focused on in this passage?  
  3. Describe the way plants got water before man was created on Day 6.  
  4. Describe how God made the first man and what stands out about it?  
  5. Describe the garden that God planted.
  6. What was the first man’s job?  How is this connected to Genesis 1:26?
  7. What did the Lord command the first man?  What were the consequences for disobedience?  How does this define the relationship between God and man?  
  8. Why do you think God gave this command to Adam, before He ever made Eve?  

Big Idea: God made the first man with special abilities to either obey or disobey Him, to either honor or dishonor Him, to either trust or mistrust Him.  

Brain Teaser: Was man as good as he could or ever would be in the Garden of Eden?  Is this his best state?    


Genesis 2:18-22

Key Questions

  1. What is the first thing God said was not good?  Does this mean God made a mistake?  If not, then what is the purpose of God’s statement?  
  2. Why do you think God had all the animals walk past the man?  [Hint: Aloneness]  
  3. What does it show when you name someone or something?  
  4. How does the statement “there was not a helper found fit for him” stand against the theory of evolution?  Of the animal rights movement?  
  5. Describe the amazing way God made the first woman.  What stands out about the phrase “and brought her to the man”?  

►To develop the big idea, focus on the way in which men and women are created by God to complement one another and to work together to glorify God by obedience to His commands to rule the earth.  

Genesis 2:23-24

  1. How did Adam react to God’s gift of the woman?  What is his first formal “act” toward her?
  2. According to v. 24, this was the very first ______________________?  See Matt 19:3-6
  3. What might be the significance of being “naked and not ashamed”?  
  4. Who thought up marriage?  Why does this matter?  

Take time to read and discuss other passages that describe God’s beautiful design for marriage, such as Ephesians 5:22-33 and 1 Peter 3:1-7.   

Discuss how things like divorce and so-called “gay marriage” distort the picture God intends to paint with marriage, but be sure to exalt the forgiving grace of God for repentant sinners (Rom 5:8; 8:31-39; 1 Cor 6:9-11).  



LESSON 5 – “The Slithering Serpent and the First Sin”

Passage: Genesis 3:1-6

Key Questions

  1. What is a serpent?  What or who is this particular serpent?  [Rev 12:9; 20:2]
  2. Why do you think it was not strange for an animal to be talking with the woman?  [Rev 5:13]
  3. What did the serpent say?  What is he trying to get the woman to do?  [See Matt 4:1-11]  
  4. How did the woman respond?  Who had told her these things?  [See Gen 2:15-17]
  5. In verse 4, how does the serpent accuse God?  [see John 8:39-47]
  6. What motivated the woman to eat the forbidden fruit?  
  7. What should we expect to happen immediately after verse 6?

Big Idea: Satan / the devil is the sworn enemy of God and of humanity made in God’s image, and he lies to us in order to destroy us [See 2 Cor 11:12-15; 1 Peter 5:6-11; 1 John 3:7-10; 5:18-19].

Application: What are some of the ways Satan is lying to us today?  



Genesis 3:7-13

  1. What was the very first thing that happened to the man and woman after they disobeyed God?  And what does it mean that “they knew that they were naked?”  [See Gen 2:24-25]
  2. What did the man and woman do once they knew they were naked?  [Do not miss the point here that they are trying to cover their own sinful shame by their own human works.]  
  3. Walk through verses 8-13 and list all the consequences of sin that you see in the text.
  4. Why does God ask the man and woman questions?  Does God need information?  

In the development of the big idea, focus in on sin’s horrible consequences, the worst of which are shame before God and the natural desire to trust our own righteousness or works to fix our sin problem.  

Instead of studying the next passage this week, take time to trace out the theme of salvation from sins by God’s grace in Christ alone, and not by human effort or works.  Show your children that this is the dominant message of the entire Bible!  Choose several of your favorite salvation passages to read and discuss together.    


LESSON 6 – “The Cursed Creation”

Passage: Genesis 3:14-19

Key Questions

  1. Who does God curse first?  What does he tell the serpent?  Is verse 14 directed to the animal we call a snake, or to the devil who used the snake for his evil purposes?  
  2. Is verse 15 more directed to the devil or to the actual animal that we call a snake?  What clues do you see that the devil is being spoken to by God now?  
  3. Who might the offspring of the devil be?  Who is the offspring of the woman who crushes the devil’s head?  [See Gal 3:15-29; Rom 16:17-20]
  4. How will the curse of sin affect the woman per verse 16?  [To see what the word “desire” means go to Genesis 4:7.]  
  5. In what ways will the curse of sin impact the man per vv. 17-19?  What else is impacted by Adam’s sin?  

Big Idea: Sin brings the curse of God down upon everything.  

Application: How do you see the curse of sin still at work in the world today?  



Genesis 3:20-21

  1. What does it show us about the marriage relationship that the man names the woman?  
  2. Why does Adam need to rename his wife, since he already named her back in 2:23?  And what does the name he gives her reveal about what’s happened in Adam’s heart?  [HINT: Grace!  God’s grace is giving them a chance to start over, as it were.  And Adam names her “the mother of life” right after her sin and his sin brought a curse!  See 1 Cor 13:1-7.]  
  3. What does God do in v. 21 and what is the significance of it?  [Recall Gen 3:7.]  

Emphasize that only God’s grace can cover our sins and change our hearts.  God can. We cannot.

Enjoy tracing out the theme of animal sacrifice / substitutionary atonement of sins in the Bible.   

Genesis 3:22-24

  1. Who is God talking to?  What does He say?  
  2. What might it mean that “the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil”?  Isn’t this kind of what the serpent said would happen back in 3:5?  So what’s the difference?  What might Eve have thought would happen as compared to what actually did happen?  
  3. Is God kicking them out of Eden a judgment or a blessing?  Justice or grace?  Why?  
  4. What is the statement being made by God to have an angel guard the tree of life?  
  5. When does the tree of life show back up in the story of redemption?  [Rev 22]
  6. Was there any evidence of God’s saving grace at work in Genesis 3 before this passage? [Absolutely!  Verse 15 is the promise of the coming of Christ!  And they didn’t physically die nor were they banished immediately to hell.]  

Again, emphasize that even in judgment, God is merciful.  His plan of salvation is all of grace and will be the way for the Lord Jesus Christ to have preeminence in all things (Col 1:15-20).
