LESSON 8 – “Be Fruitful and Multiply”
Passage: Genesis 5
Key Questions
1. What key doctrines from Genesis 1 are repeated here?
2. What does it signify that God “named them Man when they were created”?
3. How much time transpired between the birth of Able and the birth of Seth?
4. How might the genealogy of Seth help us understand what Gen 4:25-26 means?
5. Who / what stands out to you among the men listed in Gen 5? Why?
6. Is there anything significant about the name “Noah” and the expectation upon him?
7. How are these genealogies relevant to us today? Is there a “big picture” in Gen 3-5?
Big Idea: Despite the curse of sin, God’s grace is seen in the multiplication of the human race.

AT HOME PASSAGES
Genesis 6:1-4
1. What might be the big point of vv. 1-2? [HINT: It seems to imply sinful lusts and male
domination rather than selfless love.]
2. Why might God have decreased the life span of mankind?
3. What is the description of mankind in those days? [HINT: Giants and very strong with long
life spans. This helps inform your answer to #2 above.]

*Do not chase the rabbit trail regarding who the “son of God” are in this passage. Wild theories have
arisen and dots in the Bible have been connected that on their face do not seem to actually be
connected. Adam is called the son of God (Luke 3:38). Sometimes angels are called “son of God” (Job
1:6), but there is no indication in the Bible that angels are actually capable of producing children with
humans. In fact, Jesus seemed to indicate otherwise (Matt 22:30). Angels are “ministering spirits” (Heb
1:14). So, assume the text in its plain meaning simply refers to men taking women as wives.
►As you develop the big idea, focus on the growing “strength” of mankind which we know always leads
to pride, and God’s decree to shorten the human lifespan.
Genesis 6:5-8
1. What did the Lord “see?” How does this help us understand sin more fully?
2. What does it mean “the Lord regretted that He had made man?” Consult various translations.
3. What decision or decree did God make in light of His assessment of mankind? What is your
response or reaction to God’s decree?
4. How does verse 8 inject hope into the situation? What is the foundation of that hope?

►For the big idea, surface the righteous justice of God against human wickedness, yet our Creator is
also always so full of grace! If we got what we deserved . . .

LESSON 9 – “A RIGHTEOUS REMNANT”
Passage: Genesis 6:9-22
Key Questions
1. What does it mean that “Noah was a righteous man?” How so? How does 6:8 inform us? (See
also Job 1:1-5.)
2. List all the descriptors of God’s assessment of the condition of the world in vv. 11-13. Has the
condition of the earth changed since way back then?
3. What does verse 13 emphatically declare that God will do? Why will He do it?
4. What does God tell Noah to do and why?
5. What good news does God give Noah in v. 18? What is a covenant?
6. Is this a covenant of works or grace? What will the results of the covenant be?
7. What do we learn about Noah in v. 22?
Big Idea: God has every right to completely destroy the earth due to sin, but He is gracious and faithful
to keep His promise to defeat Satan and sin by preserving Noah and his family.
Or, God judges sin, but He also saves sinners by His grace.

AT HOME PASSAGES
Genesis 7:1-5
1. What does God tell Noah to do?
2. What does God say about Noah? Why is this important?
3. List all the ways you see God’s grace at work in vv. 2-3.
4. How does God plan to destroy life on the earth? Does Noah know what rain is? Gen 2:5-6
5. Once again, what do we see about this man Noah from v. 5? Why is this important?
►Is Noah righteous because of his obedience? Or, does his obedience show that he is righteous? See
Galatians 2:15-16; Ephesians 2:8-10; James 2:14-26; 1 John 2:29

Genesis 7:6-16
1. How old were Noah’s sons when the flood came? See Gen 5:32.
2. How many people were on the ark?
3. How long did Noah’s family and the animals have to get on the ark? Or, perhaps how long were
they in the ark before it started raining?
4. What important truth do we learn from v. 11 about the Bible?
5. How is the flood described? Is it just rain?
6. What is the importance of the last sentence of v. 16? What does this teach us about God?
Ourselves?

►As you think about the big idea, do not lose sight of question #6 above, and do not neglect to ponder
that Noah had to obey God in order to experience God’s salvation. Noah could not invent his own way.

LESSON 10 – “Only Noah was Left.”
Passage: Genesis 7:17 – 8:5
Key Questions
1. How long might it have taken for the flood to start floating the ark?
2. What was the ark primarily designed to do? Who designed it? Why?
3. How much of the earth was covered by water?
4. Imagine the horror of everything, all people, all animals, dying in just a few days’ time.
5. What do you think or feel when you read, “Only Noah was left, and those who were with him on
the ark?”
6. What good news or hopeful words are in 8:1? What do we learn of God?
7. How long might the earthquakes and volcanoes and rains have lasted per 7:24 – 8:2?
8. Where did the ark finally come to rest? Do we know where these mountains are today? How
may new mountains might have been created by the catastrophe called the Flood?

Big Idea: Sin brings devastation and death; only God’s grace brings life.

AT HOME PASSAGES
Genesis 8:6-19
1. How did Noah find out that the waters were receding?
2. Where did the olive leaf come from that the dove plucked off? How big would this tree have
been, at least possibly?
3. How long total was Noah and his family and the animals on the ark?
4. What important lessons / truths do we learn from vv. 15-17?
5. Once again, what do we see in Noah from v. 18?
►To communicate the main point, emphasize the wisdom of God in providing the right conditions for
life to thrive, and the importance of seeking His wisdom through His Word as we walk through this
world.

Genesis 8:20-22
1. How is Noah able to sacrifice clean animals without causing them to go extinct? See 7:2-3.
2. What do we learn about Noah from vv. 20-21? Recall 4:1-7.
3. What does God promise? What does God say has not and will not change after the flood?
4. How does v. 22 counter the scare tactics and arguments made by present day environmental
zealots or those constantly obsessing over “climate change?”
►To develop the big idea, focus on the only right response to God’s saving grace being worship.
