It has taken me awhile to get “in the patriotic spirit” this year. But, I think I’m finally there.

Well, almost. Or, partially.

 

Make no mistake, I am a patriot. I love the United States of America. I do not love our national sins or every policy decision made in my lifetime, or in recent years. But I love my country. I love the “ideals” upon which our Nation was founded, and still rests (at least somewhat, or on paper, i.e., the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution). I put my life on the line willingly for America as a United States Marine (1995-2000). I still believe our freedom, is worth fighting and dying for. 

But our Nation is hemorrhaging.

Aside from the raucous “USA” chants coming from World Cup Soccer fans, any honest observer has to admit we are no longer the “United” States of America. We are divided. Sorely. 

Our founders built our Constitutional Republic for a Christian people. Not necessarily in the pure, theological sense. But, certainly in the sense of our shared sense of morality and ethics. The Bible unequivocally was the bedrock upon which the laws of our land were laid and upon which our State and Federal governments were structured. Even a cursory reading of a few of the original 13 State Constitutions bears out this reality. Our form of government, as the founders often wrote, is “wholly inadequate” for any other people other than those rooted in a high view of God, His Christ, and His Word. 

And therein lies our problem. 

Many have been analyzing the current trends of so-called “democratic socialists” (really communists) getting elected. So far, it’s mostly in blue cities or states. Some think it will be contained to those deep blue regions. I am not convinced. I hope I am wrong. 

But, my dismal prognostication is not based upon economics (though it’s undeniable that young voters facing inflation often vote radically). My dim view is not based upon the reality that mid-term elections typically swing away from the President’s party (though that, too, is undeniable). 

Our problem is spiritual. Deeply so. 

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Yahweh” (Ps 33:10). 

Now, I know this is Old Testament. But the word used for “nations” here is most often a reference to Gentile or Non-Israel nations. And, indeed, the context seems to suggest such a universal application (see v. 8, for example). So, any nation who embraces the True and Living God who reveals Himself in the Bible and preeminently in Jesus Christ, may humbly expect heaven’s blessing. The second half of verse 10, in classic Hebrew poetic parallelism, reads, “the people whom He has chosen as His heritage.” 

Aha! There it is. America’s problem is spiritual. Do you see it?

The United States of America needs more Christians! True, born again, blood-bought, elect-of-God-in-Christ before the foundation of the world, Christians! The link between our spiritual condition as a people and our socio-political-economic condition is tighter than we may think. 

Our Founders understood this principle. Our Revolution followed hot on the heels of the Great Awakening. So many good resources, both videos and books, have made this case, that I wonder how there are US citizens still ignorant of it. 

But, it’s not just ignorance that’s plaguing us, dear Americans. It’s outright hatred. For the biblical ideals of our founding. Hatred for the God of the Bible and of His Christ (Psalm 2). A spiritually lost people elect leaders after their own hearts. Pagans who celebrate what God hates. Muslims who are encouraged by their religion to use deception to advance the cause of Islam (that deception would include running on acceptable political platforms to gain power in both local, state, and federal elections). All nations are undergirded by religion. All nations have laws based upon religious truth claims. All national economies rest upon religious ideals. 

The only question is which religion? What authority? What god or gods? 

Yahweh, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by and large, is no longer the God America loves, honors, fears and worships. And the Church of America had better wake up. Seek the reviving grace of Holy Spirit God. Cry out to God for another Awakening. Mass conversions to Christ. Mass evangelism and robust biblical discipleship by churches from sea to shining sea. Nothing less will do. We need Jesus. He is our only hope, my dear readers. 

If anyone doubts the darkness now saturating our land; if anyone thinks this God-hating, America-hating ideology is still confined to a few high schools and Harvard, consider that just last week a so-called “church” in our little town of Corydon, Indiana, happily hosted the town’s PRIDE celebration. 

“For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will become of those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17). 

How can America possibly endure another 50 years, much less 250? We must hit our knees and cry out with Habakkuk, “O Yahweh, in wrath, remember mercy.” And we, dear Church, must hit our streets with the gospel. Boldness must return to the American Church. Willingness to suffer and even die for the King of kings must once again mark us as God’s people.   

Only God can make America Great Again. Only. God. 

May true patriotism return (Matt 6:33).
